Southwestern Cheer Tryouts
Our Southwestern College cheer tryouts are very relaxed and are actually more in the nature of a cheer audition. Here's how our cheer tryouts work, and what we are looking for:
-Tryout candidates will arrive at the White P.E. Building and be met by members of our SC Cheer Squad. You will then have some time for stretching and warm-up. Candidates may wear whatever they choose for the tryouts--most choose to wear t-shirts, shorts, and cheer or tennis shoes.
-Members of the SC Squad will work with you to teach you 3 of our SC chants/cheers. They'll also work with you on jumps, etc.
-When you and the other candidates feel comfortable with the chants/cheers, we'll begin the tryout evaluations.
-We'll begin by having you perform the 3 cheers as a group, so that we can evaluate your performance in a group cheer situation. You will be evaluated on the following criteria: poise/timing, spirit projection, group technique, motion technique, and voice control/clarity.
-We will then ask you to individually demonstrate your three best jumps. We would like one of the jumps to be a toe-touch. The evaluation criteria for the jumps will be height, flexibility, and technique.
-Next, you will each perform an individual cheer that you have prepared. This may be a cheer you have made up or one that you have learned as a member of a cheer squad--whatever you feel would best highlight your cheerleading strengths. The cheer may be of any length, and you may use any team name and/or colors you wish in the cheer. You will be evaluated on the following criteria: poise, spirit projection, motion technique, crowd interaction, and voice control/clarity.
-Candidates with tumbling skills may also demonstrate these at this time. (Tumbling is not required to be accepted on the SC Cheer Squad.)
-Finally, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your stunting skills by working with the SC Squad and the other candidates on a variety of stunts. (This will not be a part of the official evaluation; it will just give us an opportunity to see which stunt positions and skills will work best with our current squad and the other candidates.)
-Following the tryouts, you are invited to eat lunch with the SC cheerleaders at a football tailgate or at a local restaurant, depending on which tryout date you choose--our treat! If you are trying out during one of the football game days, you will receive free tickets to the game and are invited to sit with the student body behind our cheer squad to see them "in action." Just let me know which tryout date works best for you, and we'll put you on the list!
Here are the directions to the White P.E. Building:
Directions to White P.E. Building
-Come into Winfield on 9th Street (Highway 160)
-Turn north onto College Street (located on the east side of town)
-Turn right (east) on Warren Avenue
-On the north side of the street, you will pass by a couple of dorms, and then you will see a large building that is Stewart Field House (the college gymnasium)
-Just to the east of Stewart Field House is a building named White P.E. Building. That is where we will be having the tryouts.
We are also willing to accept DVD tryouts in the mail, if that would be more convenient for you. On a DVD tryout, I would need to see an example of a personal cheer which you feel demonstrates your best cheer techniques and three of your best jumps. If you have tumbling skills, you may include those as well. If you can record examples of your stunting skills that would also be welcome. DVDs may be sent to the following address:
