TRYOUT INFORMATION

The Southwestern College SC JINX Dance Team is a group of student-athletes. We provide a quality showcase for SC athletic and performing arts events. The team performs at all home football games and home basketball games. The team will also participate in regional fine arts productions. Each year the SC JINX Dance Team participates in the Moundbuilding Ceremony, Homecoming Parade, and Homecoming Bonfire at Southwestern College. We practice 3-4 days a week with practice times arranged around team members' academic schedules.

Qualifying members of the Southwestern JINX Dance Team are eligible to receive activity scholarships of $4000 per year, for a possible total of $16,000 throughout their college career! JINX Dance Team scholarship recipients are also eligible to apply for academic scholarships from Southwestern College.

Tryout Information

Tryouts for Southwestern College are held in the fall and winter months, as well as the spring, to allow accepted dance team candidates the opportunity to apply for early admission and academic scholarship opportunities.

Our Southwestern College Jinx Dance tryouts are very relaxed and are actually more in the nature of a dance audition. Here's how our dance tryouts work, and what we are looking for:

Dance team candidates will arrive at Stewart Field House and be met by members of our current Jinx Dance Team. After stretching with our Jinx Dance Team members, the team members will teach the candidates a brief tryout dance, which will consist of various jazz dance steps, turns, kicks, and leaps. Once the candidates are comfortable with the dance routine, they will perform it in small groups before a panel of judges. During the tryouts, candidates will be judged on the following criteria: dance technique, poise, timing, flexibility, preciseness/strength of movement, synchronization, musicality, energy, crowd appeal, and performance/showmanship.

Requirements for Southwestern JINX Dance Team tryouts include:

Skills in jazz, funk, pom, and hip-hop style are encouraged. High kicks, leaps, double Right pirouettes, axles, and calypsos are also recommended skills.

6:00 p.m.: SC vs. Bethany College Football Game (Let us know if you would like to stay for the football game to watch the SC Jinx Dance Team at half-time, and we'll get complimentary tickets for you & your family)

If you are unable to attend a live tryout, DVD's of a dance performance may be sent. These may be DVD's of a solo or group dance performance. If performing in a group dance on the DVD, please send a note indicating which dancer you are. (Dance performances in which you were involved which have been posted on youtube.com may also be considered for a dance tryout--just send the youtube address of your performance, indicating which dancer you are.)
