WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College cross country teams hosted some of the best teams in the region Saturday at the annual NAIA Mid-States Classic at the Winfield Veterans Home. The No. 5-ranked Southwestern men finished fourth, while the women finished ninth.

Frank Adelman paced the Moundbuilders in Saturday's men's race. The senior All-American led most of the 8k event, and was in position to claim individual championship honors, but Oklahoma Baptist's Adam Godwin caught Adelman in the final meters of the race, and took first by less than one-quarter of a second. Adelman finished second with a time of 24:36 that tied his career-best mark.

Colton McNinch was next across the line for Southwestern, and finished seventh with a 25:14 time. Connor Drendel completed the 8K course 54 seconds behind McNinch with a time of 26:08, and Eric Lightfoot finished 24 seconds later with a 26:32 time. Sam McDaniel rounded out Southwestern's scoring runners, and finished 45th with a time of 26:33.

Eight other Moundbuilders participated in Southwestern's only home race of the season, but were not calculated in their team's score.

Wayland Baptist, which was receiving votes in the latest NAIA national poll, finished second with 88 points, Oklahoma Christian, which is transitioning to NCAA Div. II, was third with 114 points. Southwestern posted 123 points for a fourth place finish, and finished six points ahead of Lubbock Christian. The Moundbuilders were the top Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference finisher, and defeated sixth-placed, and No. 24-ranked Saint Mary by 36 points.

Sydnee Nelson paced the Southwestern women in Saturday's race. The senior finished 14th, and completed the 5K course in 19:01. Kelsey Buffum was next across the line and ran the course in 19:39, while Cassie Hollenback was 32 seconds back with a 20:11. Maddie Chapin and Wendee Harris rounded out Southwestern's participants in the race. Chapin completed the course in 20:32, while Harris finished in 21:18.

As a team, Southwestern finished ninth in the 20-team field. The Moundbuilders posted 250 points as a team, and finished 27 points behind eighth-placed Oklahoma City. Southwestern held a one-point edge on 10th-placed Lubbock Christian when the final results were posted. Oklahoma Baptist won the race with 74 team points.
