Winfield, Kan. – The city of Winfield got to enjoy something rarely seen in this part of the country, college football on a Sunday night.  Due to a lightening delay that postponed the game on Saturday, the game restarted from the spot of the pause at 6 p.m. on Sunday.  Despite a tough defensive battle, Southwestern fell to McPherson, 10-13.

This loss drops Southwestern to 1-2 and 1-1 in KCAC action, while McPherson improves to 1-2, and 1-1 in league play.

The game originally began on Saturday at 6 p.m. but storms that were in the area for the duration of the evening caused a pause in the game only a little over seven minutes into the first quarter.  At the time of the pause, McPherson led the Builders 6-0.  McPherson had scored on a two-play, 81 yard drive just a couple of minutes before lightening paused the game.  The game restarted on Sunday with the ball at the 48 yard line of Southwestern, with McPherson facing a 4th and 18 situation.

Southwestern took the lead at the 6:14 mark in the second quarter when Jordan Barrett (Oologah, OK) hit wide receiver Wayne Clutter (Colwich, KS) on a 13 yard touchdown pass.  The back shoulder throw was on the mark as Clutter barely got both feet down before tumbling out of bounds.  Austin Ledy (St. Marks, KS), KCAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week winner a week ago tacked on the extra point to give the Builders a 7-6 lead.

After going into half with a 10-6 lead after a Ledy field goal, the third quarter was a prime example of how tough this defensive battle was becoming.  After a drive from each team which both ended in missed field goal attempts by the respective kickers, Southwestern still maintained the 10-6 lead going into the fourth frame.

Unfortunately, on third and one from the six inch line, McPherson punched in the go-ahead and eventual game-winning touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Southwestern defense continued to keep the Builders in the game with several big plays but the offense was unable to tack anymore points on the board.

Southwestern was outgained by McPherson in total offense by 30 yards, 248-278.

The Moundbuilders were led by the rushing tandem of Corey Holbert (Alvarado, TX) who finished with 85 yards on 19 carries and Cass Myers (South Haven, KS) who finished with 64 yards on 18 carries.  Quarterback Jordan Barrett finished 5-20 for 69 yards.

Defensively, Southwestern shined all evening.  Pre-season All-American Zak Tazkargy (Wellington, KS) led Southwestern with 19 total tackles, five of those being solo tackles.  Garrett Mangrum (Winfield, KS) finished with 14 total tackles, while Ttorbin Harper (Winfield, KS) and Josh Plummer (Lake Havasau, AZ) finished with 12 and 10 total tackles respectively.  Harper also added an interception which he returned for 10 yards.

Southwestern will travel to Sterling, KS this Saturday to take on the Warriors of Sterling College.  The game is slated to start at 6 p.m. (CST).  Tune in to www.buildersports.com to catch the pregame show with Curt Caden at 5:30.
