DES MOINES, Iowa – The Southwestern College football team dropped its second game of the season Saturday evening. The Moundbuilders fell to the Bulldogs of Drake University, 55-14, inside historic Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Southwestern (0-2) was limited to just 152 yards of offense and eight first downs against the Bulldogs, which compete at the NCAA Div. I level in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Moundbuilders ran 54 plays in the game, while Drake (1-1) amassed exactly 500 yards on 81 plays.

Junior quarterback Christian Gordon completed nine of his 25 passing attempts for 108 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Junior transfer Austin Early saw his first playing time in a Moundbuilder uniform, and went 1-for-3 for eight yards and an interception. Junior Donny Ebanks was Gordon's favorite target, and hauled in four passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, including a 39-yard strike for Southwestern's first touchdown of the game.

Gordon also finished as the team's leading rusher with 13 yards on 12 carries.

Southwestern limited the Bulldogs to 164 rushing yards on 48 carries, but Drake quarterback Grant Kraemer completed 20 of his 27 pass attempts for 313 yards and six touchdowns.

Drake scored on its second play from scrimmage; a 66-yard touchdown pass that gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead just 51 seconds into the game, but that was Drake's only score of the first quarter. The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a five-yard touchdown pass that extended the lead to 14-0, then added two more touchdowns over the next 10 minutes to take a 28-0 advantage.

The Moundbuilders made their move late in the second quarter. Gordon capped a six-play, 75-yard drive with a 39-yard touchdown strike to Ebanks, who out-ran his defenders and put the Moundbuilders on the board. Drake fumbled on its next drive, and Gordon found Ebanks yet again three plays later. A 16 yard touchdown completion cut the Bulldog lead in half, and sent the Moundbuilders into the halftime locker room facing a 28-14 deficit.

Drake returned the favor in the third quarter. The Bulldogs scored on their first possession of the second half, then added a field goal eight minutes later to take a 38-14 lead into the fourth quarter. Drake added 17 more points in the fourth quarter, while keeping Southwestern off the board en route to the 55-14 win.

Saturday's loss drops Southwestern to 0-2 on the season. The Moundbuilders will return the road once again next Saturday, traveling to Sterling to open Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play against the Warriors of Sterling College. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the natural grass surface inside Smisor Stadium.
