BETHANY, Okla. – The Southwestern College volleyball team came up on the short end of its first contests of the 2017 season. The Lady Builders opened the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15) loss to Randall, then dropped a 3-0 decision (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) to Southwestern Christian at the SCU Triangular in Bethany, Okla.
Match 1 – Randall 3, Southwestern 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15)
Southwestern (0-1) couldn't find its offensive rhythm in Tuesday's season opener. The Lady Builders posted a .035 hitting percentage as a team, and recorded just 22 kills in the match. Randall (1-1), meanwhile, hit at a .238 clip with 39 kills.
Freshmen Lezlee Dixon and Taylor Stewart led Southwestern's offensive efforts with six kills each. Dixon added four digs and three block-assists, while Stewart finished with two digs. Junior setter Catabrean Baumann assisted on 18 of Southwestern's 22 kills, and added three digs and two kills to her resume' for the match. Senior Rhiann Hunter anchored the Lady Builder defense with 11 digs.
Match 2 – Southwestern Christian 3, Southwestern 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19)
The number 19 proved to be anything but a magic number for the Lady Builders in the final match of the event. Southwestern (0-2) was able to record 19 points in each set, but couldn't break the 20-point barrier while dropping a three-set contest to the hosting Eagles, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19.
Southwestern's 27 kills were countered by 25 attack errors, which led to a season-low .019 attack percentage in the match. SCU out-blocked the Lady Builders, 9-3, and recorded a .208 hitting percentage.
Freshman Kanami Ellis paced the Southwestern offense with seven kills, and added five digs and an ace in the contest. Fellow freshman Lezlee Dixon added six kills and five digs. Junior setter Catabrean Baumann recorded 18 assists for the second-straight match, and added eight digs, while senior Rhiann Hunter anchored the Lady Builder defense with 15 digs.
Southwestern will hit the road for its longest road trip of the season on Saturday, traveling to Conway, Ark., to compete in the Central Baptist College Triangular. The Lady Builders will face Mid America Christian at 5 p.m., before facing the Mustangs of Central Baptist College at 7 p.m. Both matches will take place inside A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse on the Central Baptist campus.
