WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern College Head Baseball Coach Kevin Frady has completed his coaching staff for the team's inaugural season. J.D. Jackson will serve as the team's pitching coach, while Chad Brown will handle infielders and Sam Thorne will coach outfielders and catchers.

"I'm excited about our coaching staff," Frady said. "The personalities of each staff member are going to align well with where we want to go as a program. The knowledge of the game and the skill set of each of our coaches will be a great benefit to our student-athletes."

J.D. Jackson comes to Southwestern from John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill., where he helped lead the Volunteers to a 40-13 overall record, and a 3.32 team Earned Run Average. Logan pitchers recorded 433 strikeouts during the 2017 season, and held opponents to a .247 batting average. Jackson has spent the last three seasons as the Pitching Coach for the Fayetteville SwampDogs summer team, and was the Pitching Coach at the University of Puget Sound from 2013-17. He started his collegiate baseball career at Connors State College, before transferring to Auburn where he received a baseball scholarship. He completed his collegiate career at Old Dominion, where he graduated with a Psychology degree in 2001. Jackson will serve as Pitching Coach for the Moundbuilders. 

"J.D. is the most important hire I had to make," Frady said. "I wanted a a proven developer to work with our pitching staff, and J.D. is that guy. He's played at a high level of collegiate and professional baseball, and has had success in the coaching ranks. I'm excited to see what he can do with our pitchers."

Chad Brown will join the Moundbuilder coaching staff after graduating from NCAA Div. II West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, where he helped guide the Buffaloes to a 36-18 overall record, and a berth in the NCAA Div. II South Central Regional tournament during his senior season. Brown played in 51 games for West Texas A&M, and was fifth on the team with a .331 batting average. The Amarillo, Texas, native finished his season with 14 doubles and four home runs while scoring 24 runs and adding 34 runs batted in. Brown will coach infielders and hitters for the Moundbuilders.

"Chad is a grinder," Frady said. "Having coached him, I know he's passionate about the game and very knowledgable. He's excited to get into the coaching profession, and I'm excited to see what he's capable of."

Sam Thorne comes to Southwestern from Biola University in Los Angeles, Calif., where he helped lead the Eagles to a 35-18 overall record, and a berth in the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament as a senior during the 2017 season. Thorne finished tied for third on the team with six home runs, while hitting .321 with five doubles and a triple. The Watsonville, Calif., native will coach outfielders and catchers at Southwestern.

"Sam came highly recommended from the Biola coaching staff," Frady said. "He's a very knowledgable catcher, and I couldn't be happier about his addition. He's already hit the ground running, and I'm excited to work with him."
