WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern College Athletic Director Matt Shelton has selected Erin Doerksen as Head Cheerleading Coach. Doerksen will begin her duties on June 1
Doerksen comes to Southwestern from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., where she spent the last year as an assistant coach for the Threshers' cheer program. In that position, Doerksen oversaw game day and competition preparation, and also managed the team's social media accounts. Her assistant coach appointment followed a four-year career as a member and captain of the Bethel varsity cheerleading squad, which recorded an undefeated regular season, a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, and an eighth place finish in the NAIA Cheer National Championships.
"We are excited to add Erin to our staff," Shelton said. "She has played an important role in helping transform Bethel into a nationally-respected program, and we are excited to see what she can do for us as we move toward becoming a competitive cheer program."
In addition to her coaching duties at Bethel, Doerksen has also worked as a substitute teacher, and a Special Education Paraeducator at Slate Creek Elementary School in Newton, Kan.
"Erin's passion for the sport of cheerleading was evident from the first time we met," Shelton said. "It is obvious to me that she demonstrates the Builder spirit that we all value at Southwestern College."
Doerksen will be charged with leading the Southwestern cheer program toward competitive status. The Lady Builders plan to declare with the NAIA as a varsity team for the 2018-19 season.
"I'm excited to help the team switch gears toward becoming a competitive program," Doerksen said. "Southwestern is very proud of its athletic programs, and I'm excited to help build the cheer program into something to be proud of as well."
