McPHERSON, Kan. – The Southwestern College women's track and field team competed in the second day of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The women posted four career best performances Friday afternoon and finished third with 85 points.
Taylor Needham recorded a personal best performance in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 55.99. The time was a meet record and Needham placed first in the event. The Cheney, Kan. native placed first in the 400 Meter Hurdles as well with a time of 1:01.33. Needham broke the meet record in the hurdles as well.
Sophomore Kari Blattner not only took first in the 800 Meter Run, but she recorded a career best performance and qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Nationals in the 'B' division. Blattner ran the race in 2:15.47. Justine Vogele also recorded a career best in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:27.29. Vogele placed seventh in the event. Needham, Blatter, and Vogele were members of the 4x400 Meter Relay that took first at the meet and recorded a season best performance with a time of 3:58.37.
Junior Shaley Shumate recorded a personal best in the Javelin, beating her previous record by almost four meters. Shumate threw 30.28m (99'4"). The Minneola, Kan. native recorded four career best performances throughout the two days.
Southwestern's last chance to qualify student-athletes for the NAIA Outdoor Championship will be Friday, May 12. The Lady Builders will head to Joplin, Mo. to compete in the Last Chance Meet.
