McPHERSON, Kan. – The Southwestern College women's track and field team competed in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship meet Thursday afternoon. The women posted five career best performance in the first day of the Championships.
Sophomore Justine Vogele posted a career best performance in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase, with a time of 11:28.21. Vogele placed first in the race. Ashley Smith placed in the top eight, finishing sixth with a time of 12:21.00.
Shaley Shumate recorded two career best performances on Thursday. The Minneola, Kan. native ran a 15.99 in the 100 Meter Hurdles and a 1:08.63 in the 400 Meter Hurdles. Shumate qualified for the finals in both events. Bailey Collier also qualified for the finals in the 100 Meter Hurdles with a time of 15.94.
Junior Taylor Needham recorded a career best performance in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 56.66. Needham placed first and qualified for the final event. Needham also placed first in the 400 Meter Hurdles, qualifying for the final event. Taya Buchanan competed in the 400 Meter Dash as well. Buchanan qualified for the final event.
Day two of the Championships will continue Friday, May 5. Women's Javelin will kick off events at 12:30.
