WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College men's tennis team notched its second-straight win Saturday morning. The Moundbuilders defeated the Threshers of Bethel College, 9-0, at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center in Winfield.

Southwestern (10-10, 3-3 KCAC) held off a pair of Thresher threats, and swept the doubles competition to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Freshmen Sheldon Hawthorne and Tomas Yacuzio cruised to an 8-3 win on the No. 1 court, but freshmen Stephen Le and Franco Poi had to hold on for a 9-7 win at No. 2. It was a similar story for Braden Baker and Brian Vancuren, who were pushed to the end, but came out on the winning side of an 8-6 decision in the No. 3 doubles match.

The Moundbuilders cruised through singles play to complete the sweep, and won all six courts in straight sets. Poi dispatched Gabe Johnson for a 6-2, 6-1 decision on the No. 1 court, while Yacuzio ousted Ryan LaCombe, 6-2, 6-0. Hawthorne blanked Connick Roe, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 match, while Baker defeated Tyler Shima, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 4 contest. Juan Esteban Ramirez and Brian Vancuren completed the Southwestern sweep with 6-2, 6-4 wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively. Ramirez defeated Grant Bellar, while Vancuren beat Shawn Bontrager.

Saturday's sweep moves Southwestern to 10-10 on the season. The Moundbuilders will return to action Wednesday, hosting the Falcons of Friends University. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center.
