McPHERSON, Kan. – The Southwestern College softball team came up on the short end of a pair of wild games Friday afternoon in McPherson. The Lady Builders were swept by the Bulldogs of McPherson College, 15-7, 8-7, at Wall Park.

Game 1 – McPherson 15, Southwestern 7 (5 Innings)
Southwestern (12-25, 3-10 KCAC) scored a pair of first inning runs, only to watch McPherson (21-19, 7-7 KCAC) answer with two of its own in the home half of the inning. The Lady Builders scored two more in the fourth, but the Bulldogs threw the haymaker in the bottom of the same inning, and used a 13-run inning to run away with a 15-7 decision.

Sophomore Paige Hall led the Lady Builders with a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate. The Miami, Okla., native added a pair of runs and three RBI, and led or tied for the team high in both categories. Junior Whytleigh Guerrero, senior Allison Flinn, and freshmen Cady Norton and Sydni Fulks each finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

Junior starter Peyton Timmerman allowed nine runs (one earned) on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in 3.2 innings of work. Freshman Hannah Foltz allowed three earned runs with a pair of walks, and was unable to record an out, while fellow freshman MacKenzie Lyons also allowed three earned runs on three hits with a strikeout in 0.1 inning of work.

Southwestern went straight to work in Friday's opener. Guerrero sent a two-out single up the middle, then scored on Flinn's double to deep left field. Flinn went on to score on a Norton single, and gave the Lady Builders a 2-0 lead before McPherson ever came to the plate.

The Bulldogs responded with two runs on two hits and an error to tie the game at 2-2 heading to the second inning. The score remained knotted until the fourth inning, when Hall reached on an infield single, then moved to second on a Fulks single. Both Hall and Fulks scored when Timmerman doubled to left-center to give Southwestern a 4-2 advantage.

McPherson returned the favor, and then some, in the home half of the inning. The Bulldogs pounded out eight hits, and took advantage of a pair of Southwestern errors to plate 13 runs, including a three-run home run that gave the 'Dogs a 15-4 lead after four innings.

Hall belted a three-run home run over the left-field fence, and gave Southwestern some fifth-inning hope, but the Lady Builders were unable to avoid the run-rule, and dropped a 15-7 contest in the opener.

Game 2 – McPherson 8, Southwestern 7
There was no shortage of offense in Friday's second game. McPherson (22-19, 8-7 KCAC) answered every Southwestern (12-26, 3-11 KCAC) threat through the first three innings. The Lady Builders took a 7-6 lead in the fifth, but the Bulldogs scored the final two runs of the game to complete the sweep with an 8-7 win.

Freshman MacKenzie Lyons went a team-best 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while sophomore Alex Ritzema, junior Whytleigh Guerrero, freshman Cady Norton and sophomore Paige Hall each finished with two hits.

Senior starter Allison Flinn went the duration in the circle, and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 15 hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Junior Peyton Timmerman send a lead-off triple through the left-centerfield gap, then scored on Guerrero's sacrifice fly to center to give the Lady Builders an early 1-0 lead. McPherson answered with two runs on four hits in its first at-bat, and took a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, freshman Sydni Fulks reached on a lead-off single through the left side to open the third. Fulks advanced to second on the same play after a wild throw. Ritzema reached on a bunt and an error, which allowed Fulks to move to third. Fulks and Timmerman, who reached on a walk, both scored on Guerrero's single through the left-centerfield gap. Ritzema went on to score when Flinn gounded out to the pitcher's circle, and Southwestern took a 4-2 lead.

Just as it did in the first inning, McPherson one-upped the Lady Builders in the bottom of the third. Five Bulldog hits resulted in four Mac runs, and gave the hosts a 6-4 lead heading to the fourth.

Southwestern forced another tie in the fourth inning. Hall singled to left to open the frame, moved to second on Lyons' single through the left side. A Bulldog error sent Hall across the plate, and Kylea Wilson, running for Lyons, scored when Ritzema singled to right, and tied the game at 6-6 after four innings of play.

Cady Norton opened the fifth inning with a single, and was replaced on the base paths by Jessica Watkins, who eventually scored on another Lyons single to give the Lady Builders a 7-6 lead. But McPherson added a run in the sixth, and took advantage of a pair of seventh-inning errors to plate the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh to steal the 8-7 win.

Friday's sweep drops Southwestern to 12-26 on the season, and 3-11 in KCAC play. The Lady Builders will return to action Wednesday, hosting the arch-rival Falcons of Friends University. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Broadway Recreation Complex.
