WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College softball team avenged an early-season road loss to Southwestern Christian University with a home-field sweep of the Eagles Friday afternoon. The Lady Builders held on for a 5-4 victory in the opener, then completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in the late game at the Broadway Recreation Complex in Winfield.
Game 1 – Southwestern 5, Southwestern Christian 4
Southwestern Christian (4-16) scored the first run of the game, and did so in the first inning, but Southwestern (8-15) answered with a four-run haymaker in the bottom of the inning. SCU mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh, but came up one run shy, and the Lady Builders held on for the 5-4 win.
Junior Peyton Timmerman led the Southwestern offense with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with two runs scored. She was the only Lady Builder to record multiple hits in the game.
Freshman starter MacKenzie Lyons pitched the entire game, and allowed four earned runs on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts in the game, and earned the win.
SCU opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Builders made their statement in the bottom of the frame. Peyton Timmerman opened the inning with a double to the left-centerfield gap, then scored when Sydni Fulks doubled to the same gap. Fulks went on to score when Allison Flinn sent a single to right. Flinn and Cady Norton, who reached on a Fielder's Choice, each scored when Lyons bounced a double down the right field line to give Southwestern a 4-1 lead.
Timmerman added what proved to be a necessary insurance run in the fourth inning. She singled to right-center, then stole second before moving to third when MacKenzi Clapp was thrown out at the plate. The Ozark, Ark., native went on to score on a Fulks sacrifice fly to push Southwestern's lead to 5-1.
Neither team scored again until the seventh inning, when the Eagles plated three runs on four hits. But Lyons induced a ground-out to end the game with SCU's potential tying run stranded at second base, and Southwestern held on for the 5-4 win.
Game 2 – Southwestern 6, Southwestern Christian 3
Southwestern (9-15) erased a 2-0 deficit with a three-run third inning, then added three more in the fifth to blow the game open. Southwestern Christian (4-17) plated a seventh-inning run, but came up three runs short, and the Lady Builders completed the sweep with a 6-3 win.
Cady Norton, Paige Hall and Ysenya Salinas each finished with two hits to lead the Lady Builders. Norton went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hall also went 2-for-4. Salinas finished 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Junior starter Peyton Timmerman pitched four complete innings in the game, and allowed just two earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Senior Allison Flinn closed the game, and allowed just one earned run on two hits with a strikeout, and earned the save.
Southwestern Christian scored two runs on four hits in the top of the second inning, and held a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third. The Lady Builders erased that deficit with a three-run third inning. Salinas opened the inning with a double to right-center, then moved to third when Clapp grounded out. Salinas and Peyton Timmerman, who reached on a walk, each scored with Flinn singled up the middle. Sydni Fulks, who reached on a Fielder's Choice, scored when Norton followed with a nearly identical single up the middle, and gave Southwestern a 3-2 advantage.
The Lady Builders gave themselves some breathing room by adding three more runs in the fifth inning. Flinn drew a lead-off walk, then moved to second on a Norton single. A Paige Hall single that dropped just behind the second baseman in shallow center loaded the bases for Kirsten Mueller, who walked to force Flinn across the plate. Clapp followed with a single through the left side that allowed Jessica Watkins, who was running for Norton, to score from third. Hannah Foltz, who pinch ran for Hall, scored on a Timmerman fielder's choice, and pushed Southwestern's lead to 6-2.
SCU plated a comeback run in the top of the seventh, but couldn't get any closer, and Southwestern completed its sweep with a 6-3 win.
Friday's sweep pushes Southwestern to 9-15 on the season. The Lady Builders will enjoy a 12-day break before opening Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play by hosting the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan University on March 22. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Broadway Recreation Complex.
