WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College men's track and field program kept its 2017 indoor season rolling last week. Those who met qualifying marks participated in the Pittsburg State University Indoor Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan., while Coby Barham completed his first Heptathlon at the Missouri Southern Lion Invitational.

Pittsburg State Indoor Gorilla Classic
Tomunci Whitfield inched closer to an NAIA qualifying mark in both of his sprint races. The junior ran the 60 Meter Dash qualifying race in 7.06 for a 19th-placed finish, and missed a 'B' national qualifying mark by just .13 second. He had similar luck in the 200 Meter Dash, where he recorded a time of 22.33 that missed the 'B' qualifying standard by .12 second. Fellow junior David Ashilonu also competed in both races, and finished the 60 Meter Dash in 7.21, while posting a 23.18 in the 200 Meter Dash.

Three different distance runners represented Southwestern in the meet. Jacob Anders completed the 800 Meter Run in 1:58.98, while Curtis Quarrels established a new personal-best mark of 4:35.31 in the 1 Mile Run. Jersey Boydstun ran the longest race of the day for the Moundbuilders, and finished the 3,000 Meter Run in 9:10.78.

Craig Lantz, Cody Walther and Zach Gray each competed in the throwing events for Southwestern. Lantz was the team's top finisher in both events, recording a distance of 13.48m (44'2.75") in the Weight Throw, and a 14.06m (46'1.5") in the Shot Put.

Missouri Southern Lion Invitational
Just under 40 miles southeast of the rest of his team in Joplin, Mo., freshman Coby Barham completed the first Heptathlon of his collegiate career at the Missouri Southern Lion Invitational. Barham recorded 3,398 points in his first effort, and finished 13th.

Southwestern will conclude its 2017 indoor slate on Friday, traveling to Manhattan, Kan., to compete in the Steve Miller Open, which will serve as the squad's last chance to post qualifying marks for next month's NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.
