WINFIELD, Kan.- The Southwestern College men's golf team notched its first tournament championship of the 2016 season Tuesday afternoon. The Moundbuilders earned medalist honors, and claimed the team championship at the South Central Kansas Spring Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield.
Playing in the final home tournament of his career, senior Seth Bryan was the top finisher in the tournament. Bryan carded a two-over-par 74 in Monday's opening round, then battled a stiff south wind en route to a six-over-par round of 78 on Tuesday. He finished the tournament at 152, and held a two-stroke margin of victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan's Keaton Divelbiss.
Justin Chuchill finished four strokes behind Bryan with a 156 (77-79), and finished sixth, while Brian Peck finished seventh at 157 (76-81). Steven Venn came in at 159 (75-84) and finished ninth, and Kyle Karpe rounded out the Southwestern scorecard with an 11th-place finish after firing a 162 (83-79).
As a team, the Moundbuilders posted a team score of 619 in the 36-hole event, and won the team championship. Southwestern finished seven strokes better than Oklahoma Wesleyan, which finished second.
Southwestern will return to action Saturday, traveling to Hesston, Kan., for the opening round of the Bethel College Spring Invitational. Saturday's round will be played at the Hesston Golf Course, while Sunday's final round will take place at Sand Creek Station in Newton.
