HOUSTON, Texas – The Southwestern College volleyball team went 1-3 in its first road trip of the season. The Lady Builders were swept by John Brown, but earned a four-set win over Wiley in the first day of the St. Thomas Tournament, then dropped a pair of four-set contests to University of the Southwest and St. Thomas in Saturday's action at the event.
Friday - Match 1 – John Brown 3, Southwestern 0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-10)
Southwestern was unable to stop a read-hot flock of Golden Eagles from John Brown University. JBU hit at a .569 clip for the match, and cruised to the three-set win.
Southwestern hit .038 in the contest, posting 16 kills on 53 attempts.
Friday – Match 2 – Southwestern 3, Wiley 1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-12, 26-24)
The Lady Builders dropped the opening set of Friday's second contest, then rallied to win the next three sets en route to the four-set win.
Katy Rhodd and Abby Warnke paced the Lady Builder offense with seven kills each, while Chasity Clark finished with four kills. Rachel Harper set 25 assists. Clark also anchored the Lady Builder defense with 11 digs, while Madison Deaton finished with 10 digs of her own.
Southwestern hit .117 in the contest, putting down 32 kills on 119 attempts.
Saturday - Match 3 – Univ. of the Southwest 3, Southwestern 1 (26-28, 25-21, 26-24, 25-15)
Brittaney Craddock recorded a season-high 25 kills, while Chasity Clark added a season-best 12 kills, but it wasn't enough to lift the Lady Builders past the Mustangs. Four different Lady Builders recorded double-digit digs in the contest. Carly Matthews finished with 21 digs, while Sarah Loesing finished with 15. Jacqueline Erlanson and Rachel Harper finished with 14 digs and 11 digs, respectively. Erlanson also set 39 of Southwestern's 42 assists.
The Lady Builders hit just .084 as a team, posting 48 kills on 179 attempts, and served six aces.
Saturday - Match 4 – St. Thomas 3, Southwestern 1 (29-31, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20)
Chasity Clark recorded 11 kills to lead the Lady Builders, who concluded the tournament with their second-straight four-set loss. Brittaney Craddock and Abby Warnke finished with 7 kills each, while Carly Matthews anchored the defense with 25 digs as one of three Lady Builders with double-digit digs. Samantha Lang and Madison Deaton each added 11 digs.
Southwestern hit .033 as a team, recording 44 kills on 181 attempts.
Following the event, Abby Warnke and Carly Matthews were named to the tournament's All-Tournament team. Warnke finished the tournament with 24 kills, while Matthews finished with 67 digs over the four-match event.
Southwestern will travel to Ottawa on Wednesday to open Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play against the Braves of Ottawa University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Wilson Field House.
