EMPORIA, Kan. – Another school record fell by the wayside as the Southwestern College women's track and field team participated in the Emporia State Relays Saturday afternoon at Welch Stadium in Emporia. Freshman Kayla Wilson highlighted the team's performances with a record-breaking performance in the long jump.
Wilson's best jump measured 5.70 meters (18' 8.5") broke Rhea Rollins' record (18' 7.75") from 2012. The jump also qualified her for next month's NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship under the "A" qualifying standard. With her record-breaking jump, Wilson finished fourth out of 50 jumpers, and was the top NAIA finisher in the event. That same jump was also the longest long jump effort in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference this season.
Wilson also competed in the triple jump, where she established a new career best with a mark of 10.90m (35' 9.25"), which was good for a 16th-place finish in the 33-jumper field.
Fellow freshman Bailey Collier also posted a top-five finish in the high jump. Collier cleared 1.60 meters, and finished third out of 13 jumpers. Her clearance was the best by an NAIA jumper in the event.
On the track, Southwestern claimed two top-10 finishes in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Kelsey Buffum finished fifth in the event with a 12:33.73 time, while Rebeca Gamez was seventh, and finished in 12:53.85.
Southwestern will return to action Saturday at the Gorilla Classic, hosted by Pittsburg State University.
