Women's Basketball - Tue, Jul 20, 2010

Six women's basketball players from Kansas, all from within 50 miles of Winfield, have signed letters-of-intent to play for Southwestern College in the 2010-2011 season. Four are 2010 high school graduates and two are transfers who played their freshman seasons in highly successful junior college programs.

The four high school signees are Lauren Green from Douglass, Kaitlin Tennyson from Andover Central, Sheri Zoglmann from Conway Springs and Sarah Amrein from Wellington. The transfers are Kristy Herman and Kendra Crow.  Herman played at Rose Hill and was at Cloud County Community College last year. Crow, who played high school basketball at Trinity Academy in Wichita, is transferring after one season at Johnson County Community College.

"We felt there was a strong group of players in our area this year," Southwestern Head Coach Dave Denly said, "and we are very happy to have this group joining our program at Southwestern. It is unusual for us to be able to sign this many quality players from our immediate area in a single season."

Tennyson, a 5-10 wing, was a key player on Andover Central teams that won the Class 4A state championship in her sophomore season and the Class 5A state title her senior year. The Lady Jaguars were undefeated in claiming the crown in 2010. Also an all-state soccer player, Tennyson was an honorable mention Class 5A basketball all-stater this past year and made first team all-conference in basketball in both her junior and senior years.

An outstanding scholar who was awarded one of Souhwestern's premier academic scholarships this spring, Tennyson averaged 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists per game as a senior, despite being slowed by a nagging leg injury virtually the entire season.

Green is considered one of the outstanding athletes in south-central Kansas, having starred in both basketball and track for the Douglass Bulldogs. A 5-8 point guard, she averaged 14 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3.6 steals per game as a senior. She was named an honorable mention all-stater by both the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital, and made the Central Plains League second team.

She was a state-class sprinter for Douglass, leading her high school team to the Class 3A state track and field championship as a junior and to the runnerup position in the state track meet in 2010.

Zoglmann is a 5-7 guard who was a first team selection in the Central Plains League in both her junior and senior seasons at Conway Springs. She was also a Class 3A all-state honorable mention player this last year. A strong ballhandler with excellent shooting skills, Zoglmann averaged 12 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.2 assists per game in her senior season.

An exceptionally strong rebounder, the 5-9 Amrein was an honorable mention all-Central Plains League player in each of her last three years at Wellington High School. In her senior season, she averaged 7 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.

After averaging 13 points and 3 assists per game in her senior season at Rose Hill, Herman played on a Cloud County Community College team that fashioned a 24-7 record this past season. The 5-6 Herman, who can play at both the point guard or shooting guard position, averaged about 3 points per game for the Lady Thunderbirds in her freshman year.

Crow also played on a very successful junior college team as a freshman, as her Johnson County team rolled up a 30-3 record and qualified for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Playing in a backup role in the post, the 5-11 Crow averaged 4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. As a senior in high school at Trinity Academy in Wichita, she knocked down 12 points and averaged 8 rebounds per game, and was named to the all-conference second team.

The six Kansas signees will be joining a Lady Builder team that posted a 22-9 record this past season, losing at Sterling in the KCAC tournament finals in overtime, 89-85. Southwestern graduated four players from that team including Jordan Jarnagin, who was a two-year starter at the shooting guard spot, and backup post players Amy Laible, Melissa Borthwick and Whitney Ward.
